Developed countries and successful organizations realized that leadership plays an important role in their success or failure; therefore, they cared much about it as top priority. John C. Maxwell in his book (THE 21 IRREFUTABLE LAWS OF LEADERSHIP) explains the importance of leadership and the required points for it through 21 laws.
The sixth law is called (The law of Solid Ground) and it states that trust is the foundation of leadership.
The important points under this law are the following:
- Trust is like a change in leader's pocket. Whenever the leader takes right leadership decisions, he gets more change and whenever he takes bad leadership decisions, he will pay for some of this change.
- The leader can build trust through showing effectiveness, ability, relation and personality.
- Leaders gain respect through taking right decisions, admitting their mistakes and putting the interests of their organizations ahead of their own personal interests and goals.
- J.R. Miller said: "The only thing that comes back from grave refusing to be buried with the person is personality. This is true. The personality continues in life and cannot be buried".
- If you have big responsibilities, it is a good sign for being trusted.
- It is not followers' responsibility to trust the leader. It is the leader's responsibility to gain follower's trust.
Trust is one of the most important factors for effective leadership; therefore, it is necessary for the leaders to build it and sustain it.
